‘Touch deprivation’ is a thing (it really is).
In today’s fast-paced world, we often forget the importance of human touch, connection, companionship and community. As humans, we need affection and touch and the lack of it leads to what experts variously call ‘touch deprivation’ or ‘skin hunger’. Even though we have an innate need to connect, many of us frequently feel alone. It’s possible you’re probably one of the people surrounded by others throughout the day—or in a long-term relationship— but still experience a deep and pervasive loneliness. (See infographic).
Men are more likely to suffer from touch deprivation than women because of stronger social prohibitions against even non-sexual, same-sex touching among adult males.
The easiest way to fix touch deprivation is for you to touch and encourage touch and expressions of affection from family members and friends. However, some people lack close relationships, or find touching friends awkward or uncomfortable.
An example of a good way to increase touch is through massage therapy. Massage provides not only the therapeutic kneading of muscles, but also skin contact with another person. Platonic cuddle therapy is another way to get more human touch. Sharing activities with a buddy also helps create connection and community.
